Consumer spending of Italian families increased in 2016 for the third year in a row. According to figures from national statistics office ISTAT, consumption of families increased by 1.3% in 2016 after a 1.5% rise in 2015, with growth therefore slowing slightly compared to the previous 12 months.
In detail, spending on goods consumption rose 1.8% in 2016, while spending on services rose 1.0%. In terms of functions of consumption, the biggest increases in volumes concerned spending on transport (+5.3%), hotels and restaurants (+2.9%), housing (+1.3%) and recreation and culture (+1.2%).
