No recovery in sight for retail sales, down 0,3% in February over prior month

Retail sales in Italy continue to remain weak. According to data from Istat, in February the seasonally adjusted retail trade index fell 0.3% compared with January 2017 (-1.1% for food goods and +0.1% for non-food goods). When compared with February 2016, the unadjusted value decreased by 1.0%. The year-on-year fall was seen across both large retailers (-1.0%) and small shops (-1.1%). Home appliances, radio, TV and recorders marked the worst performance on annual basis (-3.4%) followed by equipment for computing, telecommunications, and telephony (-3.3%). On the other hand the sector including games, toys, sports and camping ended with a 1.6% increase in February.
