In 2016, Italian households were still among the least-indebted in the Euro area from a financial point of view. According to Bank of Italy data, financial debt held by Italian households was 41.7% of GDP in 2016.
In Germany and France, this percentage is 53.4% and 57.1%, respectively.
Italy also stands well below the average of the Eurozone countries, where household debt is on average 58.7% of GDP.
