Agenzia delle Entrate
Italy's taxation agency, the Italian Revenue Agency, controlled by the Economy Ministry. Website: http://www1.agenziaentrate.gov.it/english/ It was set up to replace and unify the functions once carried out by a slew of public agencies. With more than 33,000 employees, one of its prime functions is to steer efforts aimed at countering tax evasion, which estimates say covers one-sixth of all Italian economic activity. It is also in charge of settling disputes. It was recently merged with a partial subsidiary, the unpopular Equitalia, which is tasked with collecting delinquent tax bills. Agenzia delle Entrate also commands software technology it says will allow it to identify unusual situations like households spending much more than they declare that they earn. The top manager is Rossella Orlandi.
