What you should know: born in Agrigento, where his father served as mayor, Mr Alfano began his political career with the Christian Democrats. Widely viewed as Silvio Berlusconi's political heir, he broke away from the Pdl and founded his own New Centre Right movement when Berlusconi threatened to bring down the coalition government headed by former prime minister Enrico Letta in November 2013. Mr Alfano served as the youngest Italian Justice minister in 2008-11, and is known for drafting legislation granting judicial immunity to Italian prime ministers. His Ncd party won 4.4% of the vote at its first European parliamentary elections in May 2014.
