What you should know: Prominent Italian businessman, Tronchetti Provera entered Pirelli Group in 1986, slowly building up an ownership stake after marrying into the Pirelli family. He took over operational leadership in 1992 and has been in and out of the limelight ever since, most notably when Pirelli sold a fiber optics unit at the top of the dot.com bubble and sank the windfall into buying control of Telecom Italia in 2001. Tall, urbane, and an avid sailor, he is settling into a role the elder statesman of Italy's business community.
