Agrigento

Headquarters of: Texart srl
Birthplace of: Empedocles, Luigi Pirandello.
Famous for: the Valley of the Temples archaeological area, listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Site. It is also famous for: Santo Spirito Abbey, San Lorenzo church and underwater aqueducts, San Domenico Church, the Cathedral, the College of the Filippini. Gastronomy: maccu (a minestrone made with broad beans and cabbage), pitaggio (broad beans, peas and artichokes), raw or cooked prawns, pesto made with wild fennel.
Leading political party: after major Marco Zambuto (a former member of Christian democratic party UdC, joined Partito Democratico in 2014) resigned in June 2014 over an abuse of authority scandal, special commissioner Luciana Giammanco was appointed by Regione Sicilia president Rosario Crocetta and took office on July 28, 2014. The new elections are likely to be held in the Spring of 2015.
